From Hobart to Strahan, A perfect day and The Wall the highlight.
I thought the forecast had predicted rain as it is often the case along this route, fortunately it turned out to be a perfect weather day with a bright sun, cool requiring layers until my arrival at Strahan when I needed to turn the air conditioner in my room. I am staying at the motel Strahan, which is comfortable but has a weak WiFi that disconnects frecuently and prevent me from getting into several of the internet addressess, this is always an inconvenience and specially in the day when Carlos my son was available to train me in the management of this blog papmoto.info at this moment I can not enter the blog to update it due to a weak server.
The Lyell highway is ideal for motorcycles, and I saw several coming in the opposite direction, there was not much traffic once I left the metropolitan area of Hobart.
The road meanders between farms, sheep and cattle ranches, cherry plantations, vinyards and the one climbs a low chain of mountains which makes the highway curvy and interesting, there is a lot of logging in the area and they are re planting with small pine trees.
On top of these mountains there are several man made lakes which feed a Hydro electric plant the Tungatinar plant.
Before Derwent Bridge the sign for The Wall appears, and heeding the advice of Dianne’s friend I stopped and visited the site, I am very glad I did, because housed in a modern looking building, where no phones and/or cameras are permited you pay 15 dlls, to admire a remarkable piece of art, wich consists of a 50 meters long by 3 mts high wall covered with wooden panels of Huon pine where Greg Duncan an Australian artist from Victoria, has sculpted figures representing the history of Tasmania, and he is not finished yet.
His art and abilities reminded me of Leonardo da Vinci who worked in marble blocks liberating the figures that he sculpted.Greg “liberates” these figures from the pine wood blocks where they are imprisoned, anybody that travels this way ought to take a few minutes to admire this magnificent work of art.
i arrived to Queenstown a mining town at lunch time, the highway has a lot of curves coming down from the mountains.I ate lunch with an Australian cattleman who today was driving a Harley motorcycle
45 minutes later following a windy road I arrived to Strahan where I am spending the night. Unless I stay here an extra day, I cannot take the Gordon River Cruise which sounds atractive, but it takes 6 hours, and I had already booked a room at Smithon where I will arrive in about 5 hours from here, obvious during any trip it is practically impossible to see and do everything.
